Description
Rinodina (lat. Rinodina) is a genus of crustose lichens in the family Physciaceae. While not a pathogenic plant disease in the traditional sense, in agronomy, it is often classified alongside physiological disorders due to its tendency to colonize the bark of trees that are under stress, showing poor growth rates or lack of proper horticultural care.
The organism is an epiphyte, living on the surface of the bark without directly extracting nutrients from the host plant. However, it functions as a biological indicator of an environment that is too moist and poorly ventilated. When lichen coverage becomes excessive, it can negatively affect the tree by creating a barrier that interferes with bark respiration through the lenticels.
Symptoms of Rinodina colonization include the development of thin, crust-like patches on the trunk and primary branches. The coloration ranges from grayish to brownish-black. Unlike fungal infections that cause necrotic spots or weeping sores, this lichen is superficial and usually does not cause structural tissue decay in the early stages of its development.
Development and spread are favored by high ambient humidity, lack of sunlight reaching the trunk, and excessive canopy density. Old trees with cracked or slow-growing bark are the most common hosts. Environmental factors such as long-term moisture retention on the bark surface facilitate the attachment and subsequent growth of these lichen spores.
Control measures are primarily focused on preventative horticultural practices rather than chemical fungicides. Essential steps include:
- Regular sanitary pruning to improve light penetration and air circulation.
- Manual cleaning of the bark during the dormant season to remove excessive lichen growth.
- Applying whitewash or copper-based treatments to the trunk to create a surface unfavorable for spore germination.
Proper maintenance of tree vigor through balanced fertilization and hydration is the best long-term strategy to prevent excessive lichen colonization.
