Roccella canariensis is a species of fruticose lichen often mistakenly identified as a plant disease due to its presence on tree bark. However, in agronomical and botanical terms, it is strictly an epiphyte, meaning it lives on the surface of other plants without harming them or drawing nutrients from the host.

The organism is a symbiotic complex of fungi and algae. It does not act as a pathogen, nor does it cause necrotic lesions, rots, or any systemic interference with the host plant's physiological processes. It merely utilizes the bark structure as a physical anchor to facilitate access to sunlight and atmospheric moisture.

Environmental conditions conducive to the growth of Roccella canariensis include high air humidity and frequent fog, typical of the coastal regions of the Canary Islands and Macaronesia. The lichen is highly sensitive to air quality and acts as a bio-indicator for clean environments, which is why its presence is generally considered a positive ecological sign.

Symptoms of its growth appear as grey to brown branching structures on trunks and branches. Unlike actual fungal or bacterial plant diseases, these growths do not result in wilting, dieback, or structural weakness of the tree. The bark underneath remains healthy and unaffected by the presence of the lichen colonies.

Instead, it contributes to local biodiversity, and its presence indicates a stable environment, meaning no fungicides or chemical interventions are necessary.
