Roesleria is a significant fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Roesleria hypogaea. This pathogen primarily attacks the root systems of trees and shrubs, inducing a specific form of root rot that compromises the structural integrity and nutrient uptake of the host plant.

The disease is most commonly identified in vineyards and various orchard crops. By colonizing the woody tissues of the roots, the fungus disrupts the vascular function, which typically leads to stunted development, chlorosis, and in severe cases, the eventual death of the affected plant.

Diagnostic signs are often hidden underground until the plant shows visible symptoms of decline. Key indicators include the presence of small, club-shaped apothecia (fruiting bodies) that emerge from the rotting root tissue. The roots themselves often appear discolored, brittle, and necrotic upon excavation.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of Roesleria. Heavy, poorly drained, and compacted soils provide an ideal habitat for the pathogen. Additionally, the fungus is highly persistent and can survive as a saprophyte on decaying woody debris left in the soil from previous plantings.
