Roesleria root rot is a fungal infection caused by the ascomycete Roesleria subterranea, which belongs to the Roesleriaceae family. This pathogen specifically targets the root systems of perennial plants, with grapevines being the most susceptible host. The disease is characterized by a slow, progressive decline of the plant, often going unnoticed until the root system has suffered significant damage.
The fungus invades the bark and woody tissues of the roots, establishing a mycelial network that disrupts the plant's ability to transport nutrients and water. While the pathogen is primarily associated with vineyards, it can occasionally affect other woody species. The disease thrives in subterranean environments, making it a challenging pathogen for viticulturists to identify and manage effectively.
Symptoms above ground include a gradual loss of vigor, chlorosis, and reduced yield. As the disease progresses, leaves may become smaller, and the entire vine may eventually die. A key diagnostic feature is found on the roots, where small, stalked, club-shaped fruiting bodies of the fungus emerge, appearing as whitish to grayish growths on the root surface.
The development of this disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly moisture levels. Poorly drained, heavy clay soils with low oxygen availability provide an ideal habitat for Roesleria subterranea. The spread of the fungus usually occurs via infected nursery stock, contaminated soil movement through machinery, and irrigation water that transports spores to new areas.
The impact of Roesleria root rot on agriculture can be devastating, as it often leads to the death of mature grapevines and creates "hot spots" of infection in the vineyard. Because the fungus is soil-borne and persistent, infected sites remain hazardous for replanting for several years. Effective management relies on strict sanitation, improved soil drainage, and rigorous screening of propagation material.
