Rootless corn syndrome is a non-infectious physiological condition affecting maize during its early vegetative stages. Unlike pathogen-driven diseases, this syndrome is caused by environmental stressors and cultural practices that prevent the successful development of the nodal (secondary) root system, which is vital for the plant's long-term survival and nutrient uptake.

This condition exclusively affects maize crops, typically appearing between the emergence phase and the V4–V6 growth stage. While the seminal roots provide initial support, they are insufficient to sustain the plant as it grows, making the successful establishment of the nodal roots the most critical milestone for young corn seedlings.

Symptoms of the syndrome are easily identifiable: plants appear unstable and lean over or collapse after strong winds or rain. Upon closer inspection, the nodal roots are either entirely absent or appear as small, undeveloped nubs at the base of the stem. Affected plants often exhibit signs of drought stress or nutrient deficiency because they cannot access resources effectively.

The syndrome is primarily driven by specific soil conditions: loose, cloddy soil structures with large air pockets, or excessively shallow planting depth combined with rapid surface drying. These conditions prevent the nodal roots from penetrating the soil and anchoring the plant, causing them to stall and eventually wither before they can establish a robust root system.

To prevent rootless corn syndrome, farmers should focus on:

  • Optimizing planting depth to ensure adequate moisture contact.
  • Using row cleaners or press wheels to eliminate large air pockets in the seed furrow.
  • Ensuring soil moisture management in the top layer during the first weeks of growth.
  • Applying light cultivation or hilling to cover the crown with moist soil if the condition is detected early.
These practices facilitate root penetration and provide the necessary physical support for the developing seedling.
