Primarily recognized as a wood-decay organism, it typically colonizes the bark and cambium layers of weakened trees. While often acting as a saprotroph, it can become an aggressive pathogen under conditions that compromise the host's vitality.

The host range of this fungus includes a variety of coniferous and deciduous trees. In horticultural and forest settings, it targets trees that are stressed by environmental factors, such as drought, waterlogging, or physical wounds. Young saplings and trees with compromised bark integrity are particularly susceptible to infection and subsequent colonization by the mycelium.
