Rugonectria is a genus of fungi within the Nectriaceae family known for causing significant necrotic bark diseases in woody plants. These pathogens are primarily responsible for canker development, which affects the structural integrity and health of both orchard trees and forest species.
The host range of Rugonectria includes various fruit-bearing trees such as apples and pears, as well as deciduous ornamental trees. The fungus typically enters the host through physical wounds, pruning cuts, or natural fissures in the bark, establishing itself in the cambium and xylem tissues.
Symptoms of an infection include localized sunken lesions on the branches or trunks, accompanied by bark discoloration and cracking. A key diagnostic feature is the emergence of small, reddish-orange perithecia on the surface of the necrotic area, indicating the active reproductive stage of the fungus.
