Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Russula japonica, an obligate parasite that specifically targets plants within the Brassicaceae family. It is identified as a fungal infection characterized by the formation of rust-colored pustules on the foliage. The pathogen survives in the environment as spores, waiting for favorable conditions to penetrate the plant tissue.

Host crops for this pathogen include cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and various types of radishes. The harm caused by this disease is significant, as it leads to reduced photosynthesis, poor head formation, and secondary infections, which ultimately decrease the total harvest weight and market value of the vegetables.

Visible symptoms include the development of small, yellowish chlorotic spots on leaves. As the fungus matures, these spots turn into reddish-brown pustules containing spores. Severe infection leads to leaf necrosis, premature senescence, and the wilting of the plant. In extreme cases, the entire foliage cover is affected, hindering the plant's development.

The development of the fungus is favored by high humidity (often over 80%) and moderate temperatures. Rain splashes and wind play a major role in the dissemination of spores from infected plants to healthy ones. Poor air circulation in high-density plantings or greenhouses provides an ideal microclimate for the rapid colonization of this pathogen.

Preventive measures include the removal of infected plant residues and weeds that may serve as alternative hosts. Crop rotation is essential to break the life cycle of the pathogen. Fungicidal treatments should be applied at the early stages of disease detection. Using certified, pathogen-free seeds and maintaining adequate spacing between plants are critical steps to prevent disease outbreaks.
