Comb brittlegill (Latin: Russula pectinata) is a mushroom species belonging to the Russulaceae family. Contrary to the classification of plant pathogens, this organism is a mycorrhizal fungus that lives in a mutualistic association with the root systems of various tree species rather than acting as a disease agent.
The fungus does not infect or cause symptoms of disease in agricultural crops. Its primary biological function is the formation of a symbiotic network with tree roots, which facilitates the exchange of nutrients and water. Therefore, there is no need for protective measures, fungicides, or agricultural control protocols regarding this species.
Morphologically, the fungus is distinguished by its yellowish-brown to ochre cap, which typically reaches 3–8 cm in diameter. The most diagnostic characteristic is the margin of the cap, which exhibits a distinct, deeply grooved, or "combed" appearance as the fruiting body matures, becoming more pronounced with age.
The development of Russula pectinata is strictly tied to woodland environments where it finds suitable tree hosts like oak, beech, or birch. It thrives in soils rich in organic matter and requires moderate moisture levels to produce fruiting bodies, typically emerging from mid-summer through early autumn.
From a management perspective, this fungus is considered ecologically benign. Its presence in forest ecosystems often indicates a healthy soil environment. Since it causes no damage to crops or timber, it is not subject to any control measures in forestry or agricultural science, remaining a component of wild fungal biodiversity.
