Description

Ruzenia spermoides is a species of sac fungus that primarily colonizes the bark and wood of deciduous trees. While often acting as a saprotroph, under specific stress conditions or in the presence of existing mechanical wounds, it can act as a pathogen, contributing to bark necrosis and the overall degradation of the tree's health.

This fungus typically targets a range of hardwood species, most notably oaks and beeches. It often colonizes trees that have been compromised by environmental factors such as drought, frost cracks, or previous pest damage, using these weaknesses to establish its mycelial network within the outer layers of the host plant.

The primary symptom of an infection is the emergence of dense clusters of small, black perithecia (fruiting bodies) that rupture the bark. These appear as granular eruptions on the surface of the wood. As the infection progresses, the underlying tissue begins to decay, leading to the formation of localized lesions and, in severe cases, the eventual death of branches or parts of the main stem.

The development and spread of Ruzenia spermoides are highly dependent on moisture. High humidity and persistent rainfall provide the necessary moisture for spore germination and colonization. Spores are disseminated via wind, splash dispersal during rain events, and through the movement of wood-boring insects, which can carry the fungus from infected deadwood to susceptible living trees.

Effective management strategies focus on preventing the accumulation of deadwood and minimizing damage to healthy trees. Sanitation is the most critical factor: removing and disposing of infected material reduces the inoculum source. Additionally, applying protective wound dressings to mechanical injuries and maintaining proper tree vigor through forest management practices significantly lowers the risk of successful colonization.
