Bacterial rot, often associated with the Saccharata symptom, is a destructive plant disease primarily affecting sugar beet crops. It is caused by various species of pathogenic bacteria, most notably Pseudomonas fluorescens, which disrupt the host plant's vascular health.
The pathogen targets the roots and foliage of sugar beet plants during the vegetative stage. Infections typically occur via natural openings like stomata or through structural wounds created by soil insects, nematodes, or improper cultivation practices.
Key symptoms include systemic wilting of leaves, chlorosis, and the formation of dark, water-soaked lesions on the root surface. In advanced stages, the internal tissues of the beet root become soft and may emit a distinct, sweet, or fermented odor caused by bacterial decomposition.
Favorable conditions for the disease development include high soil moisture, poor drainage, and high humidity levels. Warm weather accelerates bacterial multiplication, allowing the infection to spread rapidly throughout the field, especially in fields with heavy soil compaction.
