Saccobolus is a genus of fungi belonging to the family Ascobolaceae. These fungi are primarily classified as coprophilous, meaning they typically thrive on the dung of herbivores. However, in agricultural environments, they frequently colonize high-organic substrates, such as compost heaps, potting soils, and mulch used in greenhouses and nurseries.
The pathogen, an ascomycete fungus, is primarily saprotrophic, breaking down organic matter. Its development is dependent on moisture and a steady supply of decomposing organic compounds. In specific greenhouse conditions, the excessive growth of these fungi can compete with the microbiome of plant roots or signal an imbalance in substrate composition.
It primarily affects seedlings and young plants growing in improperly treated soil mixes. When organic fertilizer is not sufficiently matured, Saccobolus can proliferate rapidly across the surface of the soil, potentially affecting the micro-environment surrounding the germinating seeds and developing root systems.
Symptoms of infestation are characterized by the emergence of small, distinct, fruit-like bodies known as apothecia. These are often bright in color, ranging from yellow to orange or purple, and appear as minute specks on the surface of damp, organic-rich soil. They serve as a clear indicator of high moisture levels and high organic content.
