The Saccotheciaceae family comprises a group of ascomycetous fungi that are recognized in agronomy as significant pathogens causing various spotting diseases and necrotic lesions. These fungi act as specialized parasites, infecting woody plants and shrubs, which can lead to significant physiological stress and reduced growth performance in affected crops.
The primary symptom of infection by these fungi involves the development of localized necrotic spots on leaves and stems. The pathogen utilizes specialized enzymatic mechanisms to penetrate the plant cuticle, colonizing the intercellular spaces and disrupting normal metabolic processes such as photosynthesis and water transport within the leaf tissue.
A wide variety of ornamental, orchard, and forestry plants serve as hosts for these fungi. They are particularly problematic in nursery environments where high plant density, combined with poor air circulation and elevated humidity levels, provides the optimal microclimate for rapid fungal colonization and the spread of spores to healthy plant parts.
