Sagediopsis is a genus of fungi classified as lichenicolous, meaning they live in or on lichens. These fungi are highly specialized, often acting as parasites that colonize the thallus or apothecia of various lichen species to derive nutrients for their own reproductive and vegetative cycles.
The disease is caused by fungi belonging to the Ascomycota division. Unlike pathogens targeting agricultural crops, Sagediopsis specifically targets the symbiotic relationship between the lichenized fungus and its algal partner.
