Saksenaea is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Mucorales. In agriculture, these fungi are recognized as aggressive pathogens capable of causing rapid-onset plant tissue decay. Due to their biology, they function as opportunistic pathogens that exploit weakened or damaged plant systems to establish infection.

The host range of Saksenaea is broad, affecting various greenhouse crops, ornamental plants, and post-harvest produce. The fungus is particularly dangerous in controlled environments where warm and humid conditions, which are ideal for its rapid life cycle, are frequently maintained.

Symptoms of an infection typically begin with water-soaked, soft lesions on leaves, stems, or fruits. As the disease progresses, a distinct white, fuzzy mycelial mat develops over the necrotic area. The rapid decomposition of tissues is a primary diagnostic feature of this pathogen, often leading to total collapse of the plant structure.

The development of Saksenaea is strongly correlated with environmental parameters: high humidity (above 80-90%) and warm temperatures (25-35°C). The fungus survives in soil and organic debris, and its spores (sporangiospores) are easily dispersed through irrigation water, splashing, and contaminated farming equipment.

Effective management and protection against Saksenaea require a rigorous sanitation-based approach, as curative chemical options are limited. Prevention focuses on limiting moisture availability, ensuring proper drainage, sterilizing growth media, and strictly isolating or destroying any infected plant material to prevent secondary spread across the cultivation area.
