Salmonia is a specific fungal disease caused by pathogenic microorganisms of the genus Salmonia. It belongs to a group of mycoses that affect the aerial parts of plants, negatively impacting physiological processes such as photosynthesis and transpiration. The pathogen is capable of surviving for long periods in soil and plant debris, making it a persistent threat to various agricultural crops.

The disease most frequently affects a wide range of vegetable and cereal crops, including members of the Solanaceae and Poaceae families. The infection poses a particular danger during the active growth phase of the vegetative mass, when plants are most susceptible to spore penetration through natural openings and mechanical tissue damage.

Symptoms of the infection appear as chlorotic spots, which eventually change color and merge into large necrotic zones. On the underside of the leaves, a loose fungal mycelium or spore layer is often visible, which serves as a key diagnostic feature for field inspection of crops.

Development and rapid spread of Salmonia are favored by high humidity and moderately warm environmental temperatures. The disease pressure increases significantly during seasons with frequent precipitation and fog, as surface moisture on leaves provides an ideal environment for spore germination and active colonization of plant tissues.

The harmfulness of the disease manifests in a drastic reduction of yield and deterioration of product quality. If timely protection measures are not implemented, significant crop losses can occur. Prevention strategies include using healthy seed material, maintaining proper crop rotation, applying fungicides, and ensuring the destruction of crop residues that serve as the primary inoculum source.
