Saprolegniasis is a destructive plant disease caused by oomycetes belonging to the genus Saprolegnia. Often referred to as "water molds," these pathogens are opportunistic organisms that thrive in aquatic environments or excessively damp soil conditions, posing a significant threat to seedlings.

The disease primarily targets germinating seeds and young seedlings across various agricultural and horticultural crops. It is particularly prevalent in greenhouse environments where high humidity levels and poor soil drainage create an ideal habitat for the proliferation of the pathogen.

The most distinctive symptom of the infection is the development of a fluffy, white, cotton-like mycelial growth on roots, stems, and seeds. As the infection progresses, the tissues become necrotic, softened, and eventually decay, leading to the collapse and death of the plant.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of Saprolegniasis outbreaks. Cool temperatures, combined with saturated soils, prevent plants from establishing healthy root systems, making them highly susceptible to colonization by Saprolegnia spores present in the substrate or irrigation water.

Effective management requires a comprehensive approach focusing on environmental control and sanitation. Farmers and growers should ensure proper drainage, avoid overwatering, use disease-free substrates, and apply preventive seed treatments to minimize the risk of infection and protect emerging seedlings from this virulent water mold.
