Saprolegniasis, caused by the oomycete Saprolegnia diclina, is a destructive disease that significantly impacts agricultural production, particularly in seedbeds and hydroponic systems. While often studied in aquaculture, this water mold is a persistent threat to seeds and young seedlings in overly wet growing environments.

The pathogen is classified as an oomycete, functioning as a facultative parasite that thrives in moist environments. It produces motile zoospores that can easily move through films of water, allowing the infection to spread rapidly among neighboring plants or seeds within a propagation tray or nursery bed.

Symptoms of the disease include the formation of dense, white, cotton-like mycelial mats on the surface of seeds, roots, and stem bases. Infected tissues quickly lose their structural integrity, becoming soft and necrotic. This leads to the rapid decay of seedlings, commonly known as "damping-off," resulting in severe stand loss.

The development of Saprolegnia diclina is strictly correlated with environmental stressors. Factors such as waterlogged soil, poor drainage, high humidity, and suboptimal temperatures facilitate the colonization of the host. The presence of decaying organic matter further increases the pathogen's ability to maintain high populations within the growing medium.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach centered on sanitation and environmental control. Growers must ensure proper aeration of the growth medium, avoid over-irrigation, and strictly control the quality of the water source. If an outbreak occurs, removing infected material immediately and applying appropriate fungicides is critical to preventing further spread.
