Saprolegnia ferax is a filamentous oomycete that acts as a significant pathogen in agricultural settings, particularly affecting germinating seeds, young seedlings, and root systems. Although widely known in aquatic pathology, it poses a severe threat to hydroponic systems and soil-based nursery environments.
The primary symptom of infection is the appearance of a cotton-like, white or greyish filamentous growth (mycelium) that covers the seeds or roots. As the infection progresses, the tissues become soft and necrotic, leading to rapid collapse and death of the plant tissue, which is often mistaken for general "damping-off".
Environmental conditions are crucial for the development of Saprolegnia ferax. The pathogen thrives in high-moisture environments with poor drainage and restricted oxygen availability. It is particularly aggressive at lower temperatures, which weaken the host plant's natural defense mechanisms while allowing the oomycete to proliferate.

The pathogen spreads easily through contaminated irrigation water, non-sterilized growing media, and the reuse of infected tools or pots, making nursery hygiene a critical factor for success.
