Saprolegnia hypogyna is an oomycete species traditionally known as an aquatic pathogen. In modern agronomy and greenhouse technology, particularly in hydroponic systems, it acts as a dangerous threat causing root diseases. It belongs to the group of water molds that thrive in moist environments and nutrient-rich solutions.

The pathogen spreads through zoospores, which are motile spores capable of swimming through irrigation water. Once these spores contact a susceptible host, they attach and begin to produce hyphae. This vegetative growth invades the root tissues, effectively blocking the plant's ability to take up water and essential nutrients.

It primarily impacts seedlings, leafy greens, and vegetable transplants grown in recirculating water systems. Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. Stagnant water, low dissolved oxygen levels, and high organic matter content create an ideal environment for Saprolegnia hypogyna to flourish.

The clinical signs of the infection include the appearance of white, cotton-like mycelium on the root system or near the crown of the plant. As the infection progresses, the root cortex turns brown and mushy, leading to rapid wilting. In hydroponic setups, the water may become turbid, and the infection can quickly spread across the entire rack system.

Preventive strategies are the most effective way to manage this pathogen. Key measures include maintaining optimal aeration to ensure high oxygen levels, using ultraviolet or ozone water treatment systems, and strict sanitation of all cultivation equipment.
