Description
Saprolegniosis is a plant disease caused by oomycetes belonging to the order Saprolegniales. While frequently studied in aquatic pathology, these organisms act as aggressive soil-borne pathogens in agriculture, often leading to significant losses during seed germination and early seedling stages.
This pathogen primarily targets germinating seeds and young seedlings across various horticultural and agricultural crops. It is particularly devastating in high-moisture environments, such as greenhouse seedbeds or waterlogged fields, where the pathogen can spread rapidly through the soil moisture.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of a white, cotton-like mycelial growth on the seeds or roots. As the disease progresses, the infected plant tissues soften, turn mushy, and eventually decay, which typically results in pre-emergence or post-emergence damping-off.
Environmental conditions are critical for the development of Saprolegniales. Low soil temperatures, poor drainage, high organic matter content, and excessive irrigation create an ideal niche for these pathogens to thrive. They often survive as saprotrophs until a stressed host becomes available for infection.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Farmers and growers should prioritize seed disinfection, soil pasteurization, and the maintenance of proper moisture levels to prevent waterlogging. Chemical control using systemic fungicides, specifically effective against oomycetes, is essential when environmental conditions cannot be managed otherwise.
