Sarcodon imbricatus, commonly known as the Shingled hedgehog or Scaly hedgehog, is not a plant disease but a beneficial basidiomycete fungus. It plays a critical role in forest health by establishing ectomycorrhizal associations with the root systems of coniferous trees. It is often misunderstood in broad contexts as a pathogen, but it holds no negative impact on agricultural crops or horticultural plants.
The biology of the species relies on the development of an extensive mycelial network within the soil of coniferous forests. This network facilitates the exchange of mineral nutrients and water for photosynthetically derived carbohydrates between the fungus and the host tree. Unlike plant pathogens, this process supports the longevity and vitality of the tree rather than causing necrosis or tissue decay.
