Sarcosphaera (Sarcosphaera coronaria) is an ascomycete fungus commonly known as the crown cup fungus. In an agronomic context, it acts as a soil-dwelling pathogen that can negatively impact the health of woody plants and forest-adjacent crops by colonizing the root zone, thereby disrupting nutrient uptake and causing premature senescence.
The pathogen thrives in the soil, utilizing organic matter as a primary substrate before potentially attacking living roots. The damage type is primarily root-associated decay, leading to the destruction of the mycorrhizal network. While not an aggressive agricultural parasite, its presence often indicates soil imbalance and can facilitate the secondary colonization of roots by more severe pathogens.
Symptoms of infestation are often masked until significant damage has occurred. Typical indicators include reduced annual growth, wilting during dry periods, and chlorosis of leaves or needles. A key diagnostic sign is the presence of cup-shaped, purple-to-brown fruiting bodies emerging from the soil directly around the base of the plant during the spring season.

It shows a preference for alkaline or lime-rich soils, making management strategies dependent on soil pH adjustments and the maintenance of good soil structure and drainage.
