Description
Sargassum (Sargassum) is a genus of brown macroalgae that, while natural, has become an ecological threat to coastal agriculture. Massive blooms of these pelagic algae drift onto shorelines, creating thick mats that interfere with soil quality and threaten the viability of coastal farming operations.
The biological mechanism behind this issue is the unchecked proliferation of pelagic species, which act as a hazard to terrestrial plants. While not a pathogen-driven disease, the presence of rotting Sargassum creates environmental conditions that inhibit plant growth, essentially choking the plants and introducing high levels of salts and pollutants into the soil profile.
Agricultural crops in coastal zones, particularly vegetables and tropical fruit trees, are the most vulnerable. When Sargassum decomposes, it releases high levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur compounds, which drastically alter the pH of the soil. This leads to nutrient imbalances and severe damage to root systems, often resulting in systemic wilting and crop failure.
Symptoms of impact include yellowing and chlorosis of foliage, blackened and necrotic roots due to anaerobic conditions, and stunted overall development. In cases of severe exposure, the soil structure becomes compacted and toxic, preventing water drainage and forcing farmers to adopt intensive soil remediation techniques to restore productivity.

Once removed, the area must be treated with soil conditioners to balance the chemical composition altered by the decay of the algae. Proactive monitoring and community-based collection efforts are the most effective ways to mitigate the damage to sensitive agricultural lands.
