Description
Sawadaea bicornis is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for causing powdery mildew on various species of maples. As an obligate parasite, it relies entirely on the host plant to obtain nutrients, frequently occurring on both cultivated and wild populations of the genus Acer, leading to visible damage to the foliage and shoots.
The host range is primarily focused on maple trees, including species such as Acer platanoides and Acer campestre. This pathogen is particularly problematic in nurseries, urban parks, and ornamental gardens, where the aesthetic quality of the trees is essential for landscaping purposes and ecological balance.
The primary symptom of infection is the development of a white or grayish-white powdery mycelial mat on the surfaces of the leaves. As the disease progresses, the infected leaves may become stunted, curled, or distorted. In severe cases, the foliage may exhibit chlorosis and premature senescence, causing the tree to drop its leaves much earlier than healthy specimens.
