Description
The fungus Sawadaea tulasnei is the specific pathogen responsible for powdery mildew on maple trees. It is an obligate parasite that derives its nutrition directly from the host plant's epidermal cells, leading to characteristic symptoms on both the foliage and occasionally the young shoots.
The disease initially manifests as small, white, powdery patches on the leaf surfaces. As the infection progresses, these patches expand and merge, eventually coating the leaf in a dense fungal mycelium. By late summer, small, black, spherical structures known as chasmothecia appear within the white coating, which are the reproductive overwintering bodies of the fungus.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease epidemiology. High relative humidity, combined with moderate temperatures and poor airflow within the tree canopy, creates an ideal environment for conidia germination and colonization. Shaded locations with limited sunlight often show higher infection rates.
While rarely fatal for mature trees, the disease significantly impairs aesthetic value and plant vigor. Repeated infections year after year can stunt growth, lead to premature leaf drop, and make the tree more susceptible to secondary stressors such as drought, frost, or wood-boring insects.
- Sanitation: Rake and remove all fallen leaves during autumn to reduce spore load.
