Within the framework of agricultural science, this organism is categorized as an epiphyte rather than a primary plant pathogen. It colonizes the bark of trees as a physical substrate without extracting nutrients directly from the host plant's internal tissues.
This lichen is primarily observed on the trunks and branches of various deciduous trees, including traditional orchard species. It thrives on mature trees where the bark texture is rough or fissured, providing a stable surface and trapping the organic debris and moisture required for the lichen's development.
The visual appearance of the lichen consists of a thin, grayish-white, crust-like thallus that adheres tightly to the bark. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of small, dark apothecia, which appear as tiny black streaks or dots scattered across the surface of the thallus. This distinct patterning is often mistaken by orchard owners for a sign of fungal infection.
