Description

Schizochytrium aggregatum is a species of protists belonging to the labyrinthulid group. While primarily recognized as marine saprotrophs in nature, in the context of controlled environment agriculture and aquaculture, they can act as opportunistic pathogens that compromise the health of aquatic plants and crops cultivated in water-based systems.

The disease is caused by the proliferation of these microorganisms, which exhibit a unique cell-wall degradation mechanism. By forming dense, net-like colonies, the pathogen extracts vital nutrients from the host, leading to tissue structural failure and the inevitable death of the affected plant parts. This interaction is particularly destructive when high nutrient loads are present in the irrigation water.

Affected crops include various species of aquatic vegetation and hydroponic crops. The pathogen target tissues that are constantly submerged, such as root systems or the thalli of aquatic plants. Greenhouse operations using closed-loop irrigation or recirculating aquaculture systems are at high risk if the water quality is not strictly monitored and managed.

Recognizing the symptoms early is critical for disease management.

  • Presence of a gelatinous or slimy film on roots.
  • Rapid discoloration leading to localized tissue necrosis.
  • Stunted growth of the entire plant or biomass colony.
  • Visible degradation of submerged plant organs.

Preventive measures focus on biological and chemical security within the growing facility. Regular water filtration, the use of UV-C sterilization, and keeping the growing environment within the optimal temperature range (typically 20-28°C) are essential. Furthermore, maintaining strict sanitary protocols for all equipment used in the cultivation process significantly reduces the probability of a pathogen outbreak.
