Schizopora is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Hymenochaetales, widely recognized for causing white rot in woody plants. The most common species, Schizopora paradoxa, acts as a saprotrophic fungus that breaks down the structural components of wood, such as lignin and cellulose. While it primarily colonizes dead timber, it frequently infects weakened or stressed living trees.

The host range of Schizopora includes various deciduous trees, with a notable impact on fruit-bearing species like apple and pear, as well as forest trees like oak and birch. It tends to establish itself in areas where the tree has suffered from environmental stress, such as frost cracks, sunburn, or unhealed pruning wounds, which serve as entry points for the fungal spores.

The primary diagnostic sign of the disease is the appearance of fungal fruiting bodies on the bark or exposed wood. These fruiting bodies are typically resupinate (crust-like) and range in color from white to cream or pale yellow. Their surface is characterized by a distinctive, labyrinthine, or pore-like structure. Beneath the bark, the wood becomes soft, fibrous, and notably lighter in color due to the degradation of lignin.

The development and spread of Schizopora are favored by high humidity and poor ventilation within the tree canopy. Spores are disseminated by wind and splashing rain, landing on vulnerable points on the tree. Once established, the mycelium penetrates deeper into the heartwood, slowly compromising the structural integrity of the entire tree over several growing seasons.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential to protect the long-term health of the orchard. Key measures include conducting regular sanitary pruning to remove infected branches and ensuring that all wounds are sealed with appropriate pruning sealants or copper-based fungicides. Maintaining tree vigor through balanced fertilization and adequate irrigation is crucial, as healthy trees are significantly more resistant to secondary fungal infections.
