Schizopora flavipora is a wood-decay fungus belonging to the Schizoporaceae family, recognized primarily as a pathogen responsible for white rot in various hardwood species. In terms of plant pathology, it acts as a necrotrophic parasite, capable of colonizing living trees that have been compromised by environmental stress or mechanical injuries.

This fungus primarily infects deciduous trees, including fruit-bearing varieties commonly found in orchards. It is frequently identified on apple, pear, and poplar trees. The presence of the pathogen is often associated with neglected wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning practices that expose the heartwood to fungal colonization.

The primary symptom of infestation is the emergence of perennial fruiting bodies on the bark or exposed wood. These structures are typically resupinate, meaning they grow flat against the surface, and are characterized by a cream or yellow-hued porous underside. Internally, the wood undergoes white rot, becoming fibrous and spongy as the fungus degrades lignin and cellulose.

Environmental conditions conducive to the growth of Schizopora flavipora include high humidity levels and moderate ambient temperatures. The fungus spreads via basidiospores that are dispersed by wind or splashing rain. Once the spores land on exposed woody tissue, they germinate and initiate the decay process, slowly compromising the tree's structural integrity.
