These pathogens, belonging to the class Dothideomycetes, are characterized by their ability to form small, flat fruiting bodies directly on the surface of host leaves, leading to tissue damage and necrosis.
The disease is categorized primarily as a foliar leaf spot. The pathogen infects the epidermis, where it develops its reproductive structures. As the fungus matures, these structures rupture the plant's surface, resulting in distinct dark spots that serve as clear diagnostic signs of infection.
The host range for this fungus includes various trees and shrubs, with a particular prevalence in conifer species like Abies and several broad-leaved trees. It is often found in forest environments or plantations where tree density is high, creating a humid microclimate suitable for the fungus.
Primary symptoms include the appearance of small, dark, or black circular spots on leaves or needles. These lesions may have a faint halo and are often accompanied by yellowing (chlorosis) of the surrounding tissue. As the disease progresses, the leaf may dry out, die, and fall off prematurely.
