The primary hosts for this pathogen include species of the Salix genus and other broadleaf shrubs commonly found in forest stands and ornamental gardens. The disease typically impacts the health of the foliage, manifesting more severely in environments where host plants are crowded or lack sufficient exposure to direct sunlight and air circulation.
Symptoms of an infection by Schizothyrium cryptogamum include the emergence of characteristic spots on the leaf surface. These lesions often darken over time as the fungus produces its fruiting bodies. In advanced stages, the infected areas may merge, leading to premature yellowing and necrosis, which results in early leaf drop and potential stress to the tree.
