Scleroderma is a genus of fungi often found in forest nurseries and horticultural settings. While many species are known for their mycorrhizal associations, some can interfere with the development of young plants, acting as a stressor that hampers normal growth and root health.

The causative agents are basidiomycete fungi. The disease process typically involves the colonization of the soil near the root collar. These fungi form distinctive, hard, earth-like fruiting bodies that signify their presence within the root zone, often disrupting standard nutrient uptake.

The primary host plants include young coniferous and deciduous seedlings. In forest nursery conditions, the presence of Scleroderma can lead to significant economic losses, as it weakens the vital root systems of young trees, making them susceptible to other secondary pathogens.

Symptoms of infestation include visible fruiting bodies on the surface of the growing medium, stunting, chlorosis of the needles or leaves, and a general decline in the vitality of the plant. Without intervention, the affected seedlings may show signs of wilting even when soil moisture is adequate.

Environmental factors such as excessive soil moisture, poor drainage, and high levels of organic debris favor the spread of the fungus. Prevention strategies focus on sanitation, proper substrate management, and the use of fungicides to maintain a healthy root environment for young trees.
