The Leopard earthball (Latin Scleroderma bovista) is a basidiomycete fungus belonging to the Sclerodermataceae family. While primarily categorized as a soil-dwelling fungus, its presence in managed landscapes and nurseries can be problematic, as it interacts with the rhizosphere, potentially hindering the development of beneficial symbiotic microorganisms essential for plant vigor.
The disease mechanism is primarily driven by the proliferation of mycelium and the dispersal of spores. The fungus spreads through the soil and via airborne spores produced in its distinctive fruiting bodies. In agricultural settings, high concentrations of this fungus can create ecological stress for surrounding plants, leading to nutrient competition and potential root zone disturbances.
Signs of infestation include the emergence of spherical, tough fruiting bodies in the soil near the base of plants, such as shrubs, trees, or lawn grasses. Affected plants may show stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, or general decline, often resulting from the fungus's ability to alter soil chemistry and inhibit the growth of symbiotic root-enhancing bacteria or beneficial mycorrhizal fungi.
