Common earthball (Latin: Scleroderma citrinum) is a fungus that often appears in forest nurseries and horticultural settings as a biological factor affecting container-grown seedlings. While it acts as a mycorrhizal partner in nature, in artificial cultivation environments, its unchecked proliferation can interfere with the nutrient uptake of young plants and modify the structure of growth media, leading to economic losses.

The pathogen, belonging to the Sclerodermataceae family, manifests as fruit bodies that produce large amounts of dark spores. It thrives in acidic, moist, and organic-rich environments. Its presence is often a sign of imbalanced soil chemistry, and the rapid spread of its mycelium can lead to the displacement of beneficial microorganisms essential for the healthy growth of seedling root systems.

The primary victims of this organism are forest tree seedlings, specifically conifers, although it can affect various nursery species. The symptoms are characterized by the emergence of yellow-brown, rough-skinned fungi within the plant containers, accompanied by the visible weakening of the host seedlings. This stress is typically caused by nutrient competition and physical disturbance of the root zone by the invasive fungal colony.

Spread occurs primarily through airborne spores or water-borne transport in nursery irrigation systems. If a nursery substrate is contaminated, the fungus can colonize an entire batch of seedlings rapidly. High humidity and stable, cool temperatures within greenhouses provide the necessary environment for the fungus to establish itself and complete its reproductive cycle, making containment difficult once established.

To effectively prevent and manage the occurrence of common earthball, nursery managers should follow these protocols:

  • Sterilize all growing media before planting to eliminate spores.
  • Ensure that irrigation water is clean and free from fungal contamination.
  • Adjust soil pH levels to be less conducive to fungal growth.
  • Implement strict sanitation measures, including the removal of any observed fruit bodies.
  • Optimize plant spacing and greenhouse ventilation to reduce overall humidity levels.
