Description

The Sclerodermataceae family, commonly known as false puffballs, consists of fungi that primarily function as ectomycorrhizal symbionts. However, in an agricultural and forest nursery setting, their aggressive colonization of seedling root systems can result in growth retardation and physiological stress, necessitating management intervention.

These fungi target various woody plant species, including oak, beech, and coniferous trees. By forming a dense mantle around roots, they compete with the plant for moisture and essential nutrients. When the density of the fungus becomes excessive, the host plant exhibits significant growth reduction, often confused with nutrient deficiency or soil compaction.

Key symptoms include the appearance of spherical, dark, and thick-skinned fruit bodies on the soil surface near seedlings. The internal spore mass is typically black and powdery. Infected plants often show stunted growth, leaf yellowing, and a decreased ability to recover from abiotic stress, directly correlating with the density of the fungal mycelium in the rhizosphere.

The development of Sclerodermataceae is favored by high soil organic content and persistent moisture levels. Spores are primarily disseminated through wind, water splashes, and mechanical transport via tools or equipment. The fungus thrives in acidic soil environments, making nurseries with poor drainage and high organic matter particularly susceptible to colonization.

Effective management and prevention strategies are essential for maintaining nursery health. These include:

  • Regular monitoring and removal of fungal fruit bodies before sporulation.
  • Adjusting soil pH to levels less favorable for fungal colonization.
  • Improving nursery drainage systems to prevent excess moisture.
  • Implementing strict sanitation protocols for tools and containers used in seedling production.
