Scleromitrula is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Helotiales, known to cause diseases in various plants, particularly affecting bulbs and certain grasses. As a fungal pathogen, it survives in the soil through the formation of sclerotia, which are hard, dormant structures resistant to adverse environmental conditions and chemical treatments.

The host range of this pathogen primarily includes ornamental bulbous plants, where the fungus targets the roots and lower stems. In agricultural settings, it can also affect various monocotyledonous crops, causing significant stress to the host plant during early development stages when the plants are most vulnerable to soil-borne pathogens.

Symptoms of the infection typically include the yellowing of foliage, stunted plant growth, and soft rot at the base of the stem or within the bulb. As the disease progresses, the internal tissues of the plant become necrotic, and visible signs of the fungus, such as mycelial growth or the characteristic dark sclerotia, emerge on the decaying plant parts.

The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high soil moisture levels and cool, damp weather conditions. These factors promote the germination of sclerotia and the production of spores, which are subsequently disseminated through splashing rain, irrigation water, or contaminated gardening tools.

Economic damage is caused by the loss of planting material and the reduced aesthetic or yield quality of the crops. Effective management strategies include:

  • ensuring proper soil drainage to prevent waterlogging;
  • practicing crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle;
  • using fungicide treatments during the early growth stages;
  • removing and destroying infected plants promptly to reduce inoculum levels.
