Description

Sclerophoma dieback is a fungal disease caused by pathogens of the Sclerophoma genus. This disease is particularly destructive to various conifer species, including juniper, spruce, and pine, often resulting in significant aesthetic damage and declining health of landscape plants and forest nurseries.

The causative agent belongs to the group of coelomycetes, which produce pycnidia—small, flask-shaped reproductive structures that contain conidia. These spores are released during humid weather and serve as the primary inoculum, spreading through wind, rain splashes, and sometimes via insect vectors or contaminated pruning tools.

Symptoms typically manifest as browning and desiccation of needles or shoots, starting from the tips and progressing towards the base. As the infection spreads, the bark may show sunken necrotic lesions. A hallmark diagnostic feature is the appearance of tiny, black, pimple-like pycnidia on the surface of the infected needles or bark, visible to the naked eye or with a magnifying glass.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, with high humidity and stagnant air being the most conducive conditions for fungal germination and colonization. Dense, poorly ventilated plantings are at the highest risk, as these conditions allow the spores to thrive and infect susceptible tissue during the growing season.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the spread of the pathogen. Key strategies include:

  • Regular pruning and removal of symptomatic branches to reduce the spore load.
  • Application of protective fungicides during early spring and throughout the wet season.
  • Improving air circulation by thinning out dense canopy structures.
  • Maintaining plant vigor through proper fertilization and watering, which helps plants withstand fungal attacks.
