Description

Sclerophoma dieback is a fungal disease affecting various conifer species, caused by the ascomycete Sydowia polyspora. This pathogen often acts as an endophyte, colonizing plant tissues without immediate symptoms, but becoming pathogenic when the host tree is compromised by environmental stresses such as drought, frost, or insect damage.

The disease frequently targets evergreen trees, with Douglas Fir (Douglas Fir) being a notable host. The infection disrupts the internal vascular transport of the tree, leading to stunted growth, loss of vigor, and in severe cases, the death of entire branches or the whole tree if left untreated.

Key symptoms include the browning and necrosis of needles and young shoots. Affected branches often exhibit distinct dieback patterns, starting from the tips and progressing backward. During moist conditions, small black pycnidia (fruiting bodies) may appear on the bark of dead shoots, serving as the primary source of secondary inoculum.

The development and spread of Sydowia polyspora are heavily influenced by climate. Extended periods of high humidity, rainfall, and cool temperatures create ideal conditions for spore germination and infection. The fungus is capable of overwintering on debris and infected needles, ensuring its persistence in the environment from one season to the next.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is critical: pruning and disposing of infected material reduces the source of spores. Maintaining tree vigor through proper site selection and irrigation is essential for resistance. In high-value plantations, periodic application of fungicides during susceptible growth stages can significantly mitigate the impact of the disease.
