The pathogen is an ascomycete fungus that thrives in the cracks and crevices of mature tree bark. It relies on the micro-environmental humidity trapped within these bark structures to complete its life cycle and produce sexual reproductive structures, which are critical for its dispersal across the tree canopy.

This disease primarily affects old-growth deciduous trees, particularly species of the genus Quercus (oak). While it often exists alongside epiphytic lichens, its specialized metabolism allows it to utilize the bark's organic matter, gradually weakening the tree's outer defensive barrier.
