Sclerophthora rayssiae is a significant oomycete pathogen known for causing downy mildew-type diseases in various cereal crops. As a specialized parasite, it targets the vascular and structural tissues of grasses, leading to severe physiological disruptions within the plant host.

This pathogen primarily infects millet and other related cereal species. The economic impact is substantial, as infected plants often exhibit systemic infection patterns. This results in stunted growth, reduced biomass, and in severe cases, total crop failure as the pathogen interferes with the plant's ability to produce viable seeds.
