The disease is caused by the microscopic fungus Scolecobasidium tshawytschae, a member of the imperfect fungi group. While primarily recognized in aquatic pathology, this pathogen poses a significant threat in agricultural settings, particularly within controlled environments such as hydroponics and commercial greenhouses where moisture levels are maintained high.
This fungus typically attacks the root system and the root collar of plants. Vulnerable crops include various vegetables and ornamental species grown in intensive cultivation systems. The pathogen infiltrates through contaminated substrates or irrigation water, making it a persistent issue in operations lacking rigorous sterilization protocols.
Symptoms of the infection involve the browning and necrosis of the root structure, often accompanied by soft rot at the base of the stem. As the disease progresses, the plant exhibits systemic signs of distress, including leaf chlorosis, persistent wilting despite adequate irrigation, and a complete cessation of growth which eventually leads to plant death.
The development and spread of Scolecobasidium tshawytschae are heavily favored by high moisture content in the substrate, poor aeration, and inadequate drainage.
