The fungus typically colonizes various hardwood species. It targets trees that have been previously compromised by abiotic factors, such as frost cracks, or biotic factors, including insect infestation or physical wounding. Once inside, the mycelium spreads through the xylem, gradually consuming the plant’s structural foundation and weakening its overall defense mechanisms against further environmental stressors.
Diagnostic features of the disease involve the presence of distinct fungal fruiting bodies on the surface of the bark or around existing wounds. Internally, the wood undergoes a transformation, losing its hardness and density. It takes on a fibrous, bleached appearance characteristic of white rot, eventually leading to internal hollows that increase the risk of tree failure during extreme weather conditions.
