As a wood-decaying organism, it belongs to the Basidiomycota phylum and is recognized for its ability to break down complex polymers within the wood structure, contributing to the cycle of organic matter in forest environments.

The host range of Scopuloides rimosa primarily includes various deciduous trees, with a preference for hardwood species such as beech, oak, and hornbeam. It typically colonizes the bark and inner wood of trees that are already suffering from environmental stress, wounding, or advanced maturity, using these entry points to establish its mycelial network.

The diagnostic signs of this disease are characterized by the presence of effused, resupinate basidiocarps that form thin, crust-like layers on the surface of the wood.
