Seifertia is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Seifertia azaleae (formerly known as Pycnostysanus azaleae). This fungus is primarily recognized as a significant blight affecting the buds and shoots of ornamental plants, often resulting in severe damage to the plant's aesthetic and reproductive potential.

The primary hosts for this disease are species within the genus Rhododendron, specifically azaleas. The fungus specifically targets flower buds, preventing them from opening and ultimately leading to the necrosis of the infected tissues and the death of terminal shoots.

Typical symptoms involve the browning and eventual blackening of flower buds. As the infection progresses, distinctive velvety, dark-colored pustules (conidiophores) emerge on the surface of the affected buds. These structures are the primary indicator of the fungal presence and serve as the source of inoculum.

The development and spread of Seifertia are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and prolonged moisture on the plant foliage. The spores are typically dispersed by wind, rain splashes, and insects, moving from infected buds to healthy ones during the spring and summer months.

Effective management and control strategies focus on sanitation and preventative cultural practices. Key measures include:

  • Prompt removal and destruction of all infected buds and shoots.
  • Ensuring adequate spacing between plants to improve airflow.
  • Application of appropriate fungicides during humid weather.
