Seimatosporium canker is a serious plant disease caused by various species of the Seimatosporium fungus. This pathogen is a significant threat to the health of woody plants, acting as a parasite that colonizes the bark and cambium, ultimately leading to the necrosis of stems and branches.

The fungus has a wide host range, frequently attacking popular ornamental species like roses and rhododendrons, as well as various fruit trees. It typically exploits weakened hosts, entering the plant through wounds caused by improper pruning, frost damage, insect activity, or mechanical trauma to the bark.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as sunken, discolored lesions on the bark of stems and twigs. As the disease progresses, these cankers may expand and coalesce, eventually girdling the branch and causing the terminal parts of the plant to wither and die. Small black fungal fruiting bodies often appear on the surface of these necrotic areas.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development of the disease. High humidity and cool to moderate temperatures are highly favorable for spore production and dispersal via rain splashes and wind. The fungus overwinters within the cankers on dead or living wood, ensuring the infection persists in the garden environment from one year to the next.

Integrated management is essential for controlling this disease. This involves strictly removing and burning all symptomatic branches, ensuring that clean tools are used to prevent further contamination. Applying protective copper-based sprays after pruning can provide a barrier against new infections, while maintaining overall plant vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation helps the plant resist pathogen colonization.
