Description

Seiridium is a destructive fungal disease that primarily affects various coniferous species, particularly those within the Cupressaceae family. The disease is caused by fungi of the genus Seiridium, most notably Seiridium cardinale. It functions as a wound parasite, invading the tree through cracks, pruning cuts, or environmental damage to the bark.

The host range is broad, significantly impacting cypresses, junipers, and thujas. When a tree is stressed due to poor soil conditions, drought, or incorrect planting depth, it becomes significantly more susceptible to the encroachment of these fungal pathogens, which can then spread rapidly throughout the woody tissue.

The primary clinical signs of the infection include the yellowing, browning, and eventual death of individual branches, often described as flagging. Upon closer inspection, one can identify elongated, sunken cankers on the stems or branches. These lesions often exude resin, and in later stages, tiny black fruiting bodies of the fungus emerge through the bark surface.

The environmental conditions that facilitate the development of the disease are typically high humidity, rainfall, and moderate to warm temperatures. Spores are easily disseminated via wind, rain splash, or through contaminated pruning equipment. Dense, poorly ventilated plantings create a microclimate that accelerates the colonization process.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Pruning must be performed to remove all infected limbs, cutting well into the healthy tissue, while ensuring tools are disinfected between each cut to prevent transmission. Preventive applications of copper-based fungicides can help protect healthy trees in affected areas. Maintaining plant vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization is also essential to bolster the tree's natural defense systems.
