Description

Septobasidium is a genus of fungi known for causing a unique type of plant disease characterized by a complex symbiotic relationship with scale insects. Unlike typical pathogens that kill their host, Septobasidium fungi grow over colonies of scale insects, creating a felt-like or leathery crust. The fungus obtains nutrients from the secretions of the insects and partially from the plant tissues, effectively shielding the insects from predators and environment.

This disease primarily affects woody plants, including various fruit trees like apples, pears, citrus, and numerous ornamental shrubs. It is most prevalent in regions with high humidity and moderate temperatures, which favor both the survival of scale insects and the growth of the fungal mycelium across the bark of branches and trunks.

The primary symptom is the appearance of distinct, irregular, felt-like patches on the bark, which can range from light brown to deep chocolate or greyish in color. These patches can eventually girdle a branch. As the fungus spreads, the underlying bark may experience distress, leading to reduced growth vigor of the affected limb, leaf yellowing, and in severe cases, dieback of the branch.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on the lifecycle of the scale insects. Fungal spores are dispersed by rain and wind to colonize new areas, but they require the presence of scale insect nymphs to establish the typical symbiotic mat. High plant density and poor air circulation within the canopy create ideal microclimates for the rapid expansion of these fungal colonies.

Management and prevention strategies focus on breaking the cycle between the fungus and the insect vector:

  • Regular pruning to remove heavily infested branches and improve canopy ventilation.
  • Application of horticultural oils or contact insecticides to control scale insect populations during the crawler stage.
  • Scrubbing or scraping the affected bark followed by the application of copper-based fungicides.
  • Monitoring orchard health to identify early-stage infestations and applying preventive sprays when weather conditions favor fungal growth.
