Septocyta is a genus of fungi responsible for significant plant diseases, characterized primarily by necrotic leaf spots and stem lesions. This pathogen belongs to the group of fungi that infiltrate plant tissues, disrupting their physiological functions and causing substantial structural damage to the host.

The most notable species in this group is Septocyta ruborum, which primarily infects blackberry and raspberry plants. This fungus targets the canes of the bushes, leading to a condition often referred to as purple blotch or stem blight, which can severely compromise the plant's vascular system.

The symptoms typically manifest as dark purple or reddish-brown spots on the stems, often concentrated around the leaf axils or buds. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge and crack, allowing the fungal fruiting bodies, known as pycnidia, to release spores into the surrounding environment during wet conditions.

High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air within dense plant foliage create a conducive environment for spore germination and infection. The fungus is highly opportunistic and spreads rapidly when temperatures are moderate and the canopy remains wet for extended periods.

If left unmanaged, the infection can spread across the entire plantation, significantly reducing berry yields and shortening the lifespan of the infected plants.
