Septoria leaf spot of sweet potato is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Septoria bataticola. This fungus primarily attacks the foliage of the plant, disrupting photosynthetic activity and potentially leading to a significant reduction in overall plant vigor.
The primary host for this pathogen is the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). While it mainly affects the leaves, severe infections can cause widespread defoliation, particularly in dense plantings or regions with high humidity levels during the growing season.
Clinical symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of small, circular to irregular lesions on the leaf surfaces. These spots often develop a dark brown border. Over time, microscopic black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop within these spots, serving as a diagnostic hallmark of the pathogen.
The fungus thrives in warm, moist conditions and is spread through water splashes, wind, and movement of contaminated soil or infected plant debris. The disease cycle is promoted when leaves remain wet for extended periods, facilitating the germination of fungal spores and the subsequent infection of new leaf tissues.
